A Lane Going Up The Hill

It had been a heavy rainstorm in Kampung Sepang. Jabri and Halil had just finished their dinner together at Jabri’s house. They were sitting in the living room for coffee and conversation, hoping, the rain would stop soon.

It was half past eleven at night and the downpour was showing no signs for stopping. “It looks like you’ll have to spent the night here, Halil.” Said Jabri “No way,” Halil said, “I’ve to be at work early tomorrow morning.”

Complication : A few moment later Halil got into the car, started the engine, and said good night to Jibri. Something told him that he shouldn’t have turned off the lane going up the hill, but it was the shortest way home. He knew that lane. It run across an old Chinese cemetery. There were no lights, no cars, no people, just Halil and his old car.

All of a sudden, a white shape appeared in the middle of the lane. Halil shone his beam of light in that direction. The white shape turned to Halil. He saw a pair of crimson eyes staring at him. It was a-long-haired woman in a long white dress. She grinned at Halil.

At once, Halil felt his blood frozen. His heartbeat stopped. His mouth opened but he was speechless. His eyes opened widely in terror.

Suddenly consciousness came into his mind. He quickly reserved his car and sped away just in time.

“I think I’ll take up your offer to spend the night here after all,” Halil told Jabri with his legs trembling.

    The Arrogant Swans

In a far away kingdom, there was a river. This river was home to many golden swans. The swans spent most of their time on the banks of the river. Every six months, the swans would leave a golden feather as a fee for using the lake. The soldiers of the kingdom would collect the feathers and deposit them in the royal treasury.

    complication :
One day, a homeless bird saw the river. “The water in this river seems so cool and soothing. I will make my home here,” thought the bird.
As soon as the bird settled down near the river, the golden swans noticed her. They came shouting. “This river belongs to us. We pay a golden feather to the King to use this river. You can not live here.”

“I am homeless, brothers. I too will pay the rent. Please give me shelter,” the bird pleaded. “How will you pay the rent? You do not have golden feathers,” said the swans laughing. They further added, “Stop dreaming and leave once.” The humble bird pleaded many times. But the arrogant swans drove the bird away.

“I will teach them a lesson!” decided the humiliated bird.

She went to the King and said, “O King! The swans in your river are impolite and unkind. I begged for shelter but they said that they had purchased the river with golden feathers.”

The King was angry with the arrogant swans for having insulted the homeless bird. He ordered his soldiers to bring the arrogant swans to his court. In no time, all the golden swans were brought to the King’s court.

“Do you think the royal treasury depends upon your golden feathers? You can not decide who lives by the river. Leave the river at once or you all will be beheaded!” shouted the King.

The swans shivered with fear on hearing the King. They flew away never to return. The bird built her home near the river and lived there happily forever. The bird gave shelter to all other birds in the river.

The ten thousand year old man

A geranium blossomed out of a single-striped vase on a desk, sunlight hit watches hung in a window and bounced onto a lone chair. Across the street, where years ago Olaf had cooked, the watchmaker ate.

    complication:
He looked at the clock on the wall and went to tend to his livelihood. He paid, walked across the street then once inside, sat in his chair and worked. He unhooked a watch from above his desk and set it a minute fast.

The sign supported by two poles stared back at the satiated plant. In a small town tucked away in a crescent of white-washed slate mountains, a solitary watchmaker had managed to take a town through time.

The town remained on its own time for years; in one of them, a young man hit the mountain and the trees. A hub in his brain where synapses met disconnected, and a part of him remained on the slopes.

The rest lay in a wooded hospital surrounded by doctors, nurses, loved ones, and a fish bowl. Eventually, computers replaced the convergence and its clock was set a minute too fast.

The man’s clock was also scheduled to last ten thousand years. Outside, meanwhile, massive malls took the woods.

By the time he needed his clock reset, the malls shut down, and the hands of those who could have helped, changed. In the meantime, he had predicted things, seen people go, and wondered when he would finally leave.

Then the ten thousandth year came and he sat watching the clouds wash over the mountains for a minute.

This Short Story The Golden Egg

Haria, a poor barber lived alone in his small hut. He was dedicated to his work. And whatever he earns was enough to fulfill his needs.
One evening, after returning from work, Haria was hungry. “What shall I cook tonight?” he thought.

    Complication :
Just then he heard a hen clucking outside his hut. “That hen would make a great feast for me,” thought Haria and prepared to catch the hen. With a little effort he was able to catch the hen.
As he was about to kill the hen, it squeaked, “Please do not kill me, O kind man! I will help you.” Haria stopped. Though he was surprised that the hen spoke, he asked, “How can you help me?”
“If you spare my life, I will lay a golden egg everyday for you,” said the hen. Haria’s eyes got widened in delight. Haria was surprised to hear this promise. “A golden egg! That too everyday! But why should I believe you? You might be lying,” said Haria. “If I do not lay a golden egg tomorrow, you can kill me,” said the hen. After this promise, Haria spared the hen and waited for the next day.
The next morning, Haria found a golden egg lying outside his hut and the hensitting beside it. “It is true! You really can lay a golden egg!” exclaimed Haria with great delight. He did not reveal this incident to any one, fearing that others would catch the hen.

From that day onwards, the hen would lay a golden egg everyday. In return, Haria took good care of the hen. Very soon, Haria became rich. But he became greedy. He thought, “If I cut open the hen’s stomach, I can get out all the golden eggs at once. I do not have to wait for the hen to lay the golden eggs one by one.” That night, he brought the hen to the interior portion of his house and killed the hen. But to his dismay, he found no golden eggs. Not even one.

“What have I done? My greed had made me kill the hen,” he wailed. But it was too late.

The title : The Death of A Man Eater

Tigers eat flesh of other animals in the forest. Generally tigers do not kill tigers. They like only the flesh of other animals. A tiger has to be very quick in catching other animals. But an old tiger or a wounded tiger can not run fast. At such times it can only catch people. People can not run as fast as animals. Therefore they became easy prey to tigers or other animals. After eating human flesh once, a tiger will not get any other flesh. Such a tiger is called a man-eater.
Complication : Once a tiger in a jungle in Uttar Pradesh in India turned a man-eater. It had killed women and men in the forest. These people had gone into the forest to collect firewood, fruits, roots and other things. After such incidents people stopped going into the forest.
Then the man-eater started to visit the nearby villages quite often. It killed people or domestic animals. The villages became panicky. The concerned government wanted to do something. It requested Jim Corbett to help the villagers. He agreed to track down the man-eater.
Jim Corbett was an expert hunter. He had developed a lot of experience with tigers and other wild animals. He was a lover of wild life. He did not like to kill wild animals for pleasure or sport. But he had not hesitated to kill man-eaters. This was only to help the people in trouble.
Jim Corbett arrived at the village with his rifle. The rifle was a powerful one. It could kill big and strong animals like the lion, the tiger and elephant. He had collected all the information regarding the man-eater. He selected a place. The tiger used to come there often. Jim Corbett built a platform. This platform was fixed on a high branch. A young buffalo was tied to the nearby tree. Jim Corbett waited all night. But the tiger did not come. Perhaps it had scented the hiding man and his powerful.
Jim Corbett changed his plan. He went back to the village. After that the tiger came. It killed the buffalo. Then it dragged the dead buffalo in the jungle. The villagers told Jim Corbett this news. Jim Corbett then went into the forest in search of the tiger. At last he reached the place. He climbed a tree to find out the tiger. The tiger had eaten a portion of the dead body of the buffalo. It was lying at a distance. Slowly and cautiously he followed the track. He found the tiger resting after a good meal. At first he hesitated to shoot a sleeping tiger. But then this was not a good tiger. It was a man-eater. With this thought in mind, he sent two bullets into the sleeping tiger’s head. The tiger died at once. The villagers were happy.
Jim Corbett was rewarded for his bravery.

    Bell The Cat.

There was a grocery shop in a town. Plenty of mice lived in that grocery shop. Food was in plenty for them. They ate everything and spoiled all the bags. They also wasted the bread, biscuits and fruits of the shop.

The grocer got really worried. So, he thought "I should buy a cat and let it stay at the grocery. Only then I can save my things."

(HE BOUGHT A NICE, BIG FAT CAT AND LET HIM STAY THERE. THE CAT HAD A NICE TIME HUNTING THE MICE AND KILLING THEM. THE MICE COULD NOT MOVE FREELY NOW. THEY WERE AFRAID THAT ANYTIME THE CAT WOULD EAT THEM UP.)

The mice wanted to do something. They held a meeting and all of them tweeted "We must get rid of the cat. Can someone give a suggestion"?

All the mice sat and brooded. A smart looking mouse stood up and said, "The cat moves softly. That is the problem. If we can tie a bell around her neck, then things will be fine. We can know the movements of the cat".

“Yes, that is answer,” stated all the mice. An old mouse slowly stood up and asked, "Who would tie the bell?" After some moments there was no one there to answer this question.

    A Doubtful Christmas
During the summer of 1944, my father sold everything we owned, took all the money and disappeared from our lives. My mother suddenly found herself alone to care for five boys. I was the oldest, barely ten years old. My youngest brother still wore diapers.
    Complication :
As Christmas approached, my mother didn’t seem to smile as much. She hinted that Santa might have trouble bringing us presents this year. I considered myself practically grown, so I hid my disappointment, but when I overheard a conversation between my mother and grandma, I really started to worry.
“I can’t afford to buy Christmas presents for the kids,” my mother said.
“You need to have something for them,” grandma replied. “Maybe you could wrap some of the hand-me-downs.”
“The kids would be terribly disappointed to find old clothes under the tree. I have to do better than that. Maybe I can make toys.”
Homemade toys didn’t excite me, but I realized she had no money to buy presents. Explaining that to the younger kids might be difficult, though.
One day, my mother took a saw into the forest and returned with a stack of tree limbs. She left them in the harness room in the barn and refused to tell her curious children what they were for. She worked on her project while I was in school, but I peeked when I had a chance. Pieces of wood had been cut into different shapes, then planed and sanded smooth. Later I found a stack of discs cut from a round oak limb. She also had started to carve a long piece of hickory, but I couldn’t figure out its purpose.

    St. Valentine and the Butterflies

Many many years ago, in old Rome there was a king named Claudius. Claudius was a very cruel king. He did not like to see people happy and was always starting wars with other countries.

In the same city, there lived a kind priest named Valentine. He loved all things and was often seen out in his gardens, tending the plants and enjoying the butterflies that fluttered about the pretty petals of the flowers. Father Valentine made sure to take very good care of his garden, for he knew that the butterflies needed the flowers in order to live.

Another thing that made Father Valentine very happy was to see young people in love. Love was the best thing that could happen to two people, and when couples came to him and asked him to marry them, it was a time for great festivities.

    COMPLICATION :

Now, Claudius did not like to see people get married, for that meant that when a war came, his soldiers did not want to leave their wives and children. Young soldiers did not want to leave their sweethearts. So the king, being the cruel man that he was, banned all marriages and made it illegal for anyone to become engaged.

Father Valentine was very upset at this, and he performed weddings in secrecy. Young couples in love would sneak through his garden, past the lovely flowers and butterflies and in through the back door where they would be married.
Eventually, Claudius heard that Father Valentine was still performing marriages and ordered his guards to go and arrest the priest. The good Father was taken and thrown into the dungeon!

While he was in the dungeon, Father Valentine learned that the jail-keepers daughter was blind and sent for her. He touched her brow and she was immediately granted her sight. It was a miracle!

When the cruel King Claudius, learned of this miracle, he thought it was witchcraft and immediately ordered that Father Valentine's head be chopped off!

On the morning of the execution, February 14, of the year 270, the priest sent a letter to the jail-keepers daughter, whom he had fallen in love with. He signed the letter "From your Valentine". That is why we sign our Valentine's Day cards the way we do today.

As Father Valentine was being buried after the exectution, a huge swarm of red and white butterflies appeared and circled over the people at his funeral. They fluttered here and there, and eventually landed upon Father Valentine's coffin. The people looked at the pattern that the butterflies had made when they landed and saw that it was shaped like a big heart. And that is why we use the heart as a symbol of love today.

    The Greedy Dog

Once there lived a dog. He was very greedy. There were many times that he had to pay for his greed. Each time the dog promised himself, “I have learnt my lesson. Now I will never be greedy again.” But he soon forgot his promises and was as greedy as ever.
    COMPLICATION:

One afternoon, the dog was terribly hungry. He decided to go look for something to eat. Just outside his house, there was a bridge. “I will go and look for food on the other side of the bridge. The food there is definitely better,” he thought to himself. He walked across the wooden bridge and started sniffing around for food. Suddenly, he spotted a bone lying at a distance. “Ah, I am in luck. This looks a delicious bone,” he said.

Without wasting any time, the hungry dog picked up the bone and was just about to eat it, when he thought, “Somebody might see here with this bone and then I will have to share it with them. So, I had better go home and eat it.” Holding the bone in his mouth, he ran towards his house.

While crossing the wooden bridge, the dog looked down into the river. There he saw his own reflection. The foolish dog mistook it for another dog. “There is another dog in the water with bone in its mouth,” he thought. Greedy, as he was, he thought, “How nice it would be to snatch that piece of bone as well. Then, I will have two bones.”

So, the greedy dog looked at his reflection and growled. The reflection growled back, too. This made the dog angry. He looked down at his reflection and barked, “Woof! Woof!” As he opened his mouth, the bone in his mouth fell into the river. It was only when the water splashed that the greedy dog realized that what he had seen was nothing but his own reflections and not another dog. But it was too late. He had lost the piece of bone because of his greed. Now he had to go hungry.

    BROKEN LINE
    (orientation)

There’s something about continuity. It’s always welcome.
    It’s predictable…mostly.
My father isn’t an easy man to deal with. Sometimes I wish I was
comfortable with the idea of being gay. Just to rattle his cage. So I
had to settle with being a sewage disposal consultant (everybody’s a
    consultant).

    (Complication)
He was very unhappy with me, to say the least. When I get home in the
evenings, he’d say over his shoulder,”Don’t forget the disinfectant!
    And shower outside!!”
It’s how he runs me down. It’s cool. It’s worth every moment of
watching him squirm when we have guests. Naturally they ask how things
are with me & my ‘work’. They grow a bit pale when I go into the
    details.
They nod politely and then talk about other things like AIDS, poverty
and other pressing societal issues. I think they’re usually confused
as to where to place me in terms of my father’s vocation. My father’s
what you’d call ‘a man in charge’. He’s an airforce general. As was
his father before him (technically speaking, he was a warrant officer
in his majesty’s West African Frontier Force…the context still bears
    some weight, I believe.)
I watched him survive 5 coup-de-etats, rise in rank on the corpses of
rivals and enemies. That had no attraction for me.
So when his only son decided to break the proud line of men who risk
their lives to paint the glorious colours of our national flag with
the blood of her enemies, he was disappointed.
To gain his respect would take something extraordinary in my line of
work. An opportunity came & I took it.
A bank client needed me to clear out the soak-away pit. It’s really
lonely work. At 2am with your 3-man crew, all you have is the music
from the radio, the hum of the pump & the smell of fermented shit.
That night, I was a crew member down. Peter had some ‘work’ splash on
his face 2 days earlier. I never believed an african could grow so
green so quickly. Needless to say, he was indisposed. I think he took
John’s advice and drank a mix of antiseptics.

    (resolution)
Well, it was about 3am when John noticed sinister movement in the
vicinity. The security guards on duty went to investigate. Automatic
fire was the result. Well, all hell broke loose. It was just John & I
alone in the open (till tomorrow, I’ll never figure out where the
security guards disappeared to…but I do appreciate their inability
    to take us with them).
I told John to hide & I washed the driveway, the gates & the entrance
in green shit…then I joined John. It was a spiritual experience.
Gagging reflexes, choking sounds & angry gun fire…beautiful.
    They quit. Poor working conditions.
My dad would later say with pride(for 2 weeks), “My boy showed them
    shit from hell!”
    Gotta love the talk.

    A Girl in CD Store

    by: Author Unknown, Source www.inspirationalstories.com/9/928.html

There was once a guy who suffered from cancer... a cancer that can't be treated. He was 18 years old and he could die anytime. All his life, he was stuck in his house being taken cared by his mother.

    [COMPLICATION]
He never went outside but he was sick of staying home and wanted to go out for once. So he asked his mother and she gave him permission. He walked down his block and found a lot of stores. He passed a CD store and looked through the front door for a second as he walked. He stopped and went back to look into the store. He saw a young girl about his age and he knew it was love at first sight.

He opened the door and walked in, not looking at anything else but her. He walked closer and closer until he was finally at the front desk where she sat. She looked up and asked, "Can I help you?" She smiled and he thought it was the most beautiful smile he has ever seen before and wanted to kiss her right there. He said, "Uh... Yeah... Umm... I would like to buy a CD." He picked one out and gave her money for it. "Would you like me to wrap it for you?" she asked, smiling her cute smile again. He nodded and she went to the back. She came back with the wrapped CD and gave it to him.

He took it and walked out of the store. He went home and from then on, he went to that store everyday and bought a CD, and she wrapped it for him. He took the CD home and put it in his closet. He was still too shy to ask her out and he really wanted to but he couldn't. His mother found out about this and told him to just ask her. So the next day, he took all his courage and went to the store. He bought a CD like he did everyday and once again she went to the back of the store and came back with it wrapped. He took it and when she wasn't looking, he left his phone number on the desk and ran out... !!!RRRRRING!!! The mother picked up the phone and said, "Hello?" It was the girl!!! She asked for the boy and the mother started to cry and said, "You don't know? He passed away yesterday..." The line was quiet except for the cries of the boy's mother.

Later in the day. The mother went into the boy's room because she wanted to remember him. She thought she would start by looking at his clothes. So she opened the closet. She was face to face with piles and piles and piles of unopened CDs. She was surprised to find all those CDs and she picked one up and sat down on the bed and she started to open one. Inside, there was a CD and as she took it out of the wrapper, out fell a piece of paper. The mother picked it up and started to read it. It said: Hi... I think U R really cute. Do u wanna go out with me? Love, Jacelyn The mother opened another CD... Again there was a piece of paper. It said: Hi... I think U R really cute. Do u wanna go out with me? Love, Jacelyn Love is... when you've had a huge fight but then decide to put aside your egos, hold hands and say, "I Love You"

A Wise Deer and A Cowardly Tiger

There was a dense forest on the sides of a mountain. Many kinds of animals lived in the forest. A deer was eating grass and leaves with her two young ones. The young ones wandered happily here and there. The deer followed her fawns. The young ones entered a cave. The deer was frightened. It was a tiger’s cave. There were bones of dead animals all over the cave. Fortunately, the tiger was not inside the cave at the time.

    COMPLICATION:

The deer was trying to lead her young ones out of the cave. AT that time she heard a loud roar. She saw the tiger at a distance. The tiger was coming towards the cave. It was dangerous to go out of the cave now. She thought of a plan. The tiger had come closer to the cave. The deer raised her voice and shouted, “My deer young children do not weep. I shall capture a tiger for you to eat. You can have a good dinner.”

The tiger heard these words. He was disturbed. He said to himself, “Whose is that strange voice from the cave? A dangerous animal is staying inside to capture me. I shall run away to escape death.”

So saying, the tiger began to run away from there as fast as possible.

A jackal saw the running tiger. “Why are you running in great fear?” the jackal asked. The tiger said, “My friend, a powerful and fierce animal has come to stay in my cave. The young ones are crying for a tiger to eat. The mother is promising to capture a tiger for them. So, I am running away in great fear.”

The cunning jackal was now sure. The tiger was a coward. It said to the tiger. “Do not be afraid. No animal is fiercer or stronger than a tiger. Let us go together to find out.”

But the tiger said, “I do not want to take a chance. You may run away. I will be left alone to die. So, I will not come with you.”

The jackal said, “Trust me. Let us knot our tails together. Then I will not be able to leave you.”

The tiger agreed unwillingly to this proposal. The jackal tied their tails in a knot. Now they walked towards the cave together.

The deer saw the jackal and the tiger coming together. She again raised her voice. She shouted towards her children standing inside the cave, “My dear children, I had requested her friend, the clever jackal, to capture a tiger for us. Now look the jackal has captured a tiger for us. He has tied the tiger’s tail to his tail. This is to prevent the tiger from escaping. You will soon have the tiger for our dinner.”

The tiger heard this. He was shocked. He was sure now. The jackal cheated him. So, the tiger decided to escape from the terrible animal standing inside his cave. He started running. He forgot about the jackal. He dragged the jackal over rocks and thorns. In the mad escape the jackal was caught between two rocks. The tiger pulled with all his might. His tail got cut. The jackal was killed in this incident. The tail-less tiger ran away to another part of the forest.

The deer and her young ones left the tiger’s cave. They joined their herd safely.
