Title : Queen of Arabia and Three Sheiks

Maura, who like to be thought of as the most beautiful and powerful queen of Arabia, had many suitors.

Complication : One by one she discarded them, until her list was reduced to just three sheiks. The three sheiks were all equally young and handsome. They were also rich and strong. It was very hard to decide who would be the best of them.

One evening, Maura disguised herself and went to the camp of the three sheiks. As they were about to have dinner, Maura asked them for something to eat. The first gave her some left over food. The second Sheik gave her some unappetizing camel’s tail. The third sheik, who was called Hakim, offered her some of the most tender and tasty meat. After dinner, the disguised queen left the sheik’s camp.

The following day, the queen invited the three sheiks to dinner at her palace. She ordered her servant to give each one exactly what they had given her the evening before. Hakim, who received a plate of delicious meat, refused to eat it if the other two sheiks could not share it with him.

This Sheik Hakim’s act finally convinced Queen Maura that he was the man for her. “Without question, Hakim is the most generous of you” she announced her choice to the sheiks. “So it is Hakim I will marry”.

    Tittle: THE FAIRLY INTELLIGENT FLY
    Source: English Book Grade 11

One day a fairly intelligent fly buzzed around above the web so long without lighting that the spider appeared and said, “Come on down.” But the fly was too clever for him and said, “I never light where I don’t see other flies and I don’t see any other flies in your house.
Complication = So he flew away until he came to a place where there were a great many other flies. He was about to settle down among them when a bee buzzes up and said, “Hold it, stupid, that’s flypaper. All those flies are trapped.” “Don’t be silly,” said the fly, “they’re dancing”. So he settled down and became stuck to the flypaper with all the other flies.
A large spider in an old house built a beautiful web in which to catch flies. Every time a fly landed on the web and was entangled in it the spider devoured him, so that when another fly came along he would think the web was a safe and quiet place in which to rest.

The Monkeys and The Cap Seller

Once, a cap seller was passing through a jungle. He was very tired and needed to rest. Then, he stopped and spread a cloth under a tree. He placed his bag full of caps near him and lay down with his cap on his head.

The cap seller had a sound sleep for one hour. When he got up, the first thing he did was to look into his bag. He was startled when he found all his caps were not there.

When he looked up the sky, he was very surprised to see monkeys sitting on the branches of a tree, each of the monkeys is wearing a cap of on its head. They had evidently done it to imitate him

He decided to get his caps back by making a humble request to the monkeys. In return, the monkeys only made faces of him. When he begun to make gesture, the monkeys also imitated him.

At last he found a clever idea. ” Monkeys are a great imitator,” he thought. So he took off his own cap and threw it down on the ground. And as he had expected, all the monkeys took off the caps and threw the caps down on the ground. Quickly, he stood up and collected the caps, put them back into his bag and went away.

    The story of Tanabata

Princess Vega (織姫) was the daughter of the Emperor of the Heavens (天帝). She wove beautiful clothes on the banks of the Milky Way (天の川). She worked very hard to weave beautiful cloth. He loved the cloth she made. But Vega worked too hard. She could never meet and fall in love with someone. This made her very sad.

    Complication:
The Emperor of the Heavens worried about his daughter's sadness. So, he introduced her to Altair (彦星), a farmer who lived on the other side of the Milky Way. When Princess met Altair, they fell deeply in love and were soon married. However, Princess Vega and Altair were so in love that they forgot about everything else. Princess Vega stopped making cloth for the Emperor of the Heavens and Altair let his cows wander all over heaven. This made the Emperor very angry. In his anger, the Emperor split the two lovers — in between them was the Milky Way. They could never meet again.

Princess Vega became so depressed! She could not eat; she could not sleep; she could not weave. She missed her husband, Altair, so much. She asked her father to let them meet again. The Emperor was moved by his daughter’s tears. He decided to let the couple meet once a year, on the 7th day of the 7th month, if she worked hard and weaved him beautiful cloth again.

The two lovers tried to meet, but there was no bridge across the Milky Way — a river of stars! Princess Vega cried and cried. A flock of magpies came and promised to help. They made a bridge across the river with their wings, and Princess Vega crossed the Milky Way to see her husband, Altair.

People say that if it rains on Tanabata, the magpies cannot come to help, and the two lovers must wait another year to meet.
